I will be missing you this Sunday but you are in good hands! Alan Huffman will be leading the band at 9:00 and Jon Steen will be at the organ at 11:00. Alyssa will be singing the offertory with the Trinity Choir at 11:00. At 5:00 Brian McGill will be at the piano.

A few awesome things about Jon Steen. He is a delightful and engaging friend of Trinity. He served as the organist for the Houston Astros in the early 90’s! Now there is a job I would love to have. He also won a competition in 2006 as the “Best Adult Theater Organist”, and he is currently President of the Houston Theater Organ Society. He has been playing the organ for 60 years!

When I read this Sunday’s Gospel lesson, in which Jesus says “I will not leave you orphaned”, I knew that Alyssa should sing one of our favorites, “Orphans of God”. She will be joined by the Trinity Choir.


Sorry this is so brief – I am heading out to Lubbock for Allie’s graduation! Then off to Deutschland!

Music for the Fifth Sunday of Easter

This Sunday is Mother’s Day. So in honor of all the Mom’s, Trinity Ringers (made up mostly of moms) will be bringing the special music. They will be playing two pieces by two of the most prolific handbell composers – Cynthia Dobrinski and Cathy Moklebust. Cynthia earned her Bachelor of Music degree fro TCU, and went on to teach at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, also in Ft. Worth. Cathy is a Northerner, hailing from South Dakota.

Joy and Elation is an up tempo piece that we have enjoyed playing, The rhythm bears a striking resemblance to the tune “Downtown”. See if you can hear it! The piece uses lots of effects, such as martellato, echo ring, shakes and thumb damps.

At the offertory we will play a fun arrangement of Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing. This piece utilizes lots of mallets, and also the handchimes. We are thankful for Troy Laubsch and Maddie Smith filling in with us!

At 5:00 Laura Valenciano will sing Handel's I Know That My Redeemer Liveth.

Some thoughts on Sunday’s hymns:
In this Sunday’s gospel, Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life”, so at both services we will sing “Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life” from George Herbert’s “The Call”. (We use a lot of texts from Herbert!) This text was famously set to music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, which is what we will sing at 11:00. At 9:00, we will take the same text, but set it to the tune of “Scarborough Fair”.


At 9:00 we will sing one of Ted’s favorites – “It Is Well With My Soul”, written by a distant uncle, Horatio Spafford. In 1873, Spafford’s wife and four daughters were traveling to Europe by the ocean liner Vile de Havre. Halfway across the Atlantic, the liner stuck a Scottish ship and within minutes was doomed. All four children perished and Mrs. Spafford was rescued. Mr. Spafford booked passage on the next available ship and left to join his grieving wife. With the ship about four days out, the captain called Spafford to his cabin and told him they were over the place where his children went down. According to Bertha Spafford Vester, a daughter born after the tragedy, Spafford wrote “It Is Well With My Soul” while on this journey.

Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.



I will be out the next 3 Sundays. Allie graduates from Texas Tech University next Saturday and we will be in Lubbock celebrating. On Monday, Spencer and I will be accompanying my Mom to Germany to visit the Uncles, Aunts and Cousins! Jon Steen will be at the organ on May 21 and Jack Balog will be here on May 28 and June 4. You will also be in for a treat as Alyssa leads the band on May 28. I will miss you and see you on Trinity Sunday, June 11. Another big treat in store for that day!
